Tourmaline becomes the first producer in Canada to achieve Grade A Certification from MiQ

Tourmaline has become the first Canadian natural gas producer to achieve MiQ’s Grade A Certification, representing the highest performance tier under MiQ’s globally recognized methane measurement, reporting and verification standard.

This certification applies to approximately 1.6 bcf/d of Tourmaline’s Northeast B.C. (NEBC) natural gas production, which is equivalent to 19% of Canadian natural gas exports (Canadian Energy Regulator, Canada–U.S. Energy Trade Market Snapshot 2024). MiQ’s assessment, and this certification, reflects a fully integrated measurement and reporting standard, encompassing production, gathering and boosting, and gas processing across key scoring categories.

Tourmaline is also the first company in MiQ’s history to certify the gas processing component of the natural gas value chain, extending independent verification beyond the wellhead. The integrated certification demonstrates Tourmaline’s ability to tackle methane across the supply chain while ensuring accountability.

With approximately 5% of global natural gas production being certified by MiQ, primarily in the United States, Tourmaline’s achievement marks an exciting development in Canada’s natural gas sector (MiQ).

As Canada's largest natural gas producer, Tourmaline has set a new benchmark for lower-emission gas production in Canada, positioning the company as a first mover at a time when stakeholders are demanding credible, transparent evidence of methane performance.

FAQ

MiQ is the not-for-profit global leader in methane emissions certification, working with operators, gas buyers and traders, methane tech providers, and independent auditors, all involved in their mission to abate methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.

The MiQ Registry is a secure digital ledger where all MiQ Certificates are held from issuance to retirement, providing clarity on all MiQ Certificates by tracking certified gas from production through to retirement by the end-user. This ecosystem creates transparency around methane emissions, prevents double-counting, and enables end-users to claim the environmental credentials for their GHG reporting.

Certified gas is natural gas produced by companies whose operations are independently certified by third-party auditors. This clear, neutral assessment of natural gas provides operators with the information they need to drive down their emissions. MiQ is enabling the growth of a market for certified gas to accelerate the reduction of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.

Operators choose any independent auditor from the list of MiQ-accredited auditors. To obtain this recognition, those auditors are required to have proven expertise in methane emissions management, accounting, and monitoring in the oil and gas sector, and they must have stringent processes in place to retain integrity, transparency, and trust.

MiQ certified gas provides natural gas buyers with greater transparency on methane emissions, so they can better understand what they’re buying from their chosen suppliers. With certified gas, buyers can choose lower-emission natural gas that has been independently verified.

The MiQ Standard is a standalone framework to assess the methane emissions intensity and carbon (CO2e) intensity at the asset level from each stage of the natural gas supply chain and some stages of the crude oil and natural gas liquids supply chain. To achieve grade A, the producer must achieve a methane intensity of less than 0.05% for the production segment.
